Workshop for Faculty Leaders Running Efficient Meetings – Making Effective Decisions* Facilitator: John Tropman, Professor of Human Services Management, School of Social Work and Adjunct Professor, Management and Organizations, Ross School of Business, University of Michigan Tuesday, November 3, 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m., Kellogg Center, Room 105 In response to requests for leadership development opportunities for faculty, including how to run successful meetings, John Tropman, an expert on effective meetings and author of Making Meetings Work, will offer participants exemplary approaches and solutions to their meeting challenges. Designed to serve the needs of faculty as emergent leaders, as well as academic administrators, this workshop also includes a discussion of where decisions are made and how to obtain high quality decisions, and overviews strategies to create meetings people will enjoy attending. *Denotes topics preferred on the 2009 Needs Assessment Surveys. CEO of Me: What Academics Need to Know* Facilitator: Ellen Ernst Kossek, University Distinguished Professor, School of Labor and Industrial Relations, MSU Wednesday, November 11, 8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m., Kellogg Center, Red Cedar Rooms Academics face challenges managing boundaries between work and home. In this workshop, participants will discuss the challenges academics face. Then, based on Dr. Kossek’s book, CEO of Me: Creating a Life That Works in the Flexible Job Age, and her research with the Center for Creative Leadership, participants will explore six work-life patterns and learn how individuals can move toward a more productive and comfortable pattern. Participants will discover their personal flexstyle and explore tools to attain more control over their lives, while learning how academic departments can use these tools to create supportive cultures and promote healthy work environments. Telling Your Story: How and Why Facilitator: Heather Swain, Assistant Vice President, University Relations, MSU Tuesday, December 1, 8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m., Kellogg Center, Red Cedar Rooms At a university, visibility and reputation affect recruitment, funding streams, and opportunities to partner. Effectively communicating the caliber and relevance of MSU research, teaching, and outreach to stakeholders and the general public builds trust, raises perceptions of value, and, ultimately, yields investment in the institution. In this session, participants will learn 1) how to be a powerful reputation-builder for the university simply by telling their story, 2) ways to shape a story, 3) the tools of storytelling, 4) how to use today’s communications environment, and 5) why the time invested in telling your story is the gift that keeps on giving. Participants will also learn how University Relations can help them get their story out in ways that benefit us all. | |||
