Meet Michigan

The Meet Michigan program is a very successful "traveling seminar" that provides members of the MSU community with an opportunity to learn more about MSU's extensive research, outreach, and cooperative efforts throughout the state.
The Meet Michigan program offers a one-day multidisciplinary seminar each Fall semester and a three-day broadly defined disciplinary seminar each Spring semester.
The Spring 2008 Meet Michigan three-day traveling seminar will focus on Technology, Telecommunications, and Technology-Human Interface and will take place Wednesday, May 7 until Friday, May 9, 2008.

Goals of the Meet Michigan Program:
To increase awareness of:
- opportunities for outreach teaching, research and service to meet the needs of Michigan’s diverse communities and citizens.
- MSU collaborations throughout Michigan in outreach research, teaching and service.
- resources at MSU to assist in developing collaborations.
To promote collegiality and community among MSU faculty, administrators and graduate students across the disciplines.
To clarify the faculty role in outreach to:
- increase the involvement of MSU faculty, specialists, and librarians in collaborations.
- increase the interest and involvement of graduate students in pursuing community collaborations during their careers.
To increase MSU collaborations through:
- new relationships with potential community partners across the state of Michigan.
- new relationships with academic and professional peers within their local communities and across the University.
- increased grant activity.
Eligibility for Faculty, Specialists and
Librarians
Thirty places are designated for tenure system faculty, and specialists and
librarians in the continuing appointment system.
Inclusion of Doctoral Students
The Fall 2007 and Spring 2008 seminars include space for 10 advanced doctoral
students whose research and teaching would directly benefit from an on-site
journey with scientists, faculty and other professionals in the disciplinary
foci. Doctoral students are included at no cost thanks to support from The
Graduate School.
How to Apply
Because we anticipate a high demand for limited seating on our tour bus, please complete the application as soon as possible. Each application must include a brief statement (approximately 250 words) explaining how participation in Meet Michigan will support the applicant’s goals in research, teaching, and/or outreach, or support the strategic goals within his/her unit.
Selection Process and Criteria
A Selection Committee, comprised of staff from the Office of the Provost, will review and select the 30 faculty and academic staff participants.
The Selection Committee(s) will give priority to applicants:

whose work focuses on and/or supports the
disciplinary foci:
- Fall 2007 One-Day Seminar: Focus on Detroit
- Spring 2008 Three-Day Seminar: Technology, Telecommunications and the Technology—Human Interface
- whose research, teaching and outreach goals—and/or those strategic goals within their unit--will benefit from their participation in Meet Michigan
- who are available to attend both the orientation and the full duration of the seminar.
Future Meet Michigan Program Themes:
We anticipate that future Meet Michigan programs will have different broadly
defined disciplinary foci on a rotating basis. To suggest future themes and
topics, e.g., natural and social sciences, design, or urban affairs, contact us at
