(Registration at 8:00 a.m.; the program begins at 8:30 a.m.)

The search process demonstrates the University's institutional values and its quest for excellence. There are few activities that can have a more powerful public impact than a search. If done well, it reflects on the institution and leaves in its wake hundreds of candidates whose impression of the University will be based on its timeliness, courtesy, and professionalism. MSU's academic hiring procedures are intended to ensure that colleges and departments hire the best complement of faculty and academic staff, and advance diversity of the University's academic workforce. This workshop will identify: 1) the role that administrators and search committees play in achieving these goals; 2) the procedures to be followed; and 3) where the breakdown in the process often occurs, the resulting delays, and their impact on new hires. Reasons for the appropriate use of search procedure waivers and spousal/partner appointment support will also be discussed. Particular attention will be given to the challenges and opportunities in the recruitment of a more diverse tenure system faculty at MSU.

Through the use of case studies, participants will have an opportunity to explore proven strategies and systemic planning for successful and inclusive hiring. The case studies build on the University’s academic hiring procedures and will include discussions on effective preparation of the search committee, drafting the position description, recruiting candidates, evaluating curriculum vitas, conducting interviews, evaluating candidates, and how a range of factors, including bias, impact on institutional goals. Search committee members are encouraged to attend this workshop along with school directors and department chairs. This program is co-sponsored by the ADAPP-ADVANCE Grant, the Office for Inclusion and Intercultural Initiatives and F&OD.

The Office of the Provost has committed to implementation of APR on a seven-year cycle. Academic Program Review is intended to be a comprehensive look at all academic aspects of a unit, including teaching, research, service, and outreach and engagement. It provides an opportunity for unit self-assessment and planning and is a mechanism for evaluation of program quality. This seminar will address the following:

  • What the APR is and what it is not
  • What we learned from the pilot year of program review in 2008-09
  • How APR aligns with and complements current planning, budget, accreditation, and assessment processes

Paulette Granberry Russell, Director, Office for Inclusion & Intercultural Initiatives, Senior Advisor to the President for Diversity, MSU
Kristine Moore, Institutional Equity Coordinator, Office for Inclusion & Intercultural Initiatives, MS

Panelists:

Friday, November 20, 1:45 p.m. – 4:00 p.m., MSU Union, Parlor A
(Registration at 1:45 p.m.; the program begins at 2:00 p.m.)

MSU, like other institutions of higher education, has significant populations of students, faculty and staff with disabilities within its community. MSU values full participation by persons with disabilities in all aspects of campus life. Faculty, staff, administrators and persons with disabilities all play a role in facilitating an environment of inclusion and opportunity. This highly interactive workshop will illustrate concepts surrounding disability at MSU, including an overview of demographics; legislation; and responsibilities of faculty, supervisors and others involved in academic and organizational programming. This program will address:

  • How is “disability” defined?
  • What are our obligations as faculty members and administrators to accommodate disabilities?
  • Who pays for accommodations?
  • What are best practices for handling accommodation requests?
  • What is an administrator’s role in engaging in the interactive process?
  • What is the faculty member’s role in engaging in the interactive process?
  • What do administrators and faculty need to be aware of in terms of classroom tools and possible disability-related issues (e.g., use of “clickers” / automated response systems)?
  • What if a department or college receives a VISA form outlining an accommodation that is not believable?
  • What should administrators know about the transition for a student with a disability from high school to MSU?
  • How should administrators handle disability-related medical issues with their faculty and what are the legal implications for faculty, staff and administrators?

The seminar will integrate case study discussions about these important issues that arise in every area of the University. Participants will discuss the cases followed by commentary by the panelists. Administrators are encouraged to attend the Accessible Learning Institute prior to the LEAD session.

This program is jointly sponsored by the Offices for Inclusion & Intercultural Initiatives, the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities and F&OD as a segment of the Accessible Learning Institute.
