About Sonya Gunnings-Moton

Sonya Gunnings-Moton is Assistant Dean for Student Support Services & Recruitment in the College of Education at Michigan State University, and a faculty member in Counseling, Educational Psychology & Special Education. Her interests in the field of counseling psychology include clinical practice and managed care, mood disorders among women of color, and growth and professional development of educators. Within the college, her primary responsibilities include program efforts fostering the recruitment and retention of under-represented groups for undergraduate and graduate program study, and, serving as program director for a major, multi-year, urban education partnership grant.

She earned her BS Degree in Human Development & Social Policy from Northwestern University, and her MA and Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Michigan State University. Dr. Gunnings-Moton has a wealth of experience in K-12, Higher Education and Business partnerships, with a focus on urban teacher education and learning, and school-university-community relationships. Dr. Gunnings-Moton has served as an Executive Board member of the Association of Black Psychologists, Mid-West Regional Representative of the Association of Multicultural Counseling and Development of the American Counseling Association and Associate Editor of the Journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development. She has worked for a number of years as a consultant in education and business settings regarding issues of effective cultures, leadership for change and diversity initiatives.
