MSU Faculty Emeriti Association
Steering Committee Meeting Minutes
209 Olds Hall
September 20, 2006 1:30-3:30 p.m.
Attendees: Stone, Reid, Wickert, Ishino, Funk, Gliozzo, Medick, Sommers, Vanosdall and Greenbaum
I. Welcome
Chair Stone welcomed the group and noted that the next three meetings of the
Steering Committee will be on October 18, 2006, November 15 and December 20.
He reminded everyone of the next seminar on October 16 with Ms. Pamela Beemer
being the speaker. He indicated that he might be out of town for our next meeting
and he asked Professor Gliozzo to chair the meeting. Professor Gliozzo gladly
agreed.
A lengthy discussion took place on the appointment of Mary McCartney to the
Faculty Affairs committee to study health care. There has been email correspondence
with John Powell, the Chair of Faculty Affairs. He informed us that no membership
on the subcommittee would be held by anyone other than “active”
faculty. He said that we would be welcome to give our views to the group as
outside consultants. It was clear that emeriti faculty were not recognized as
being important to their deliberations. Professor Stone indicated that a meeting
will be set up with the old and the new Chairman of the Executive Committee
on Academic Governance to discuss future representation of our Association on
faculty Committees.
II. The minutes of the August 23, 2006 meeting were approved with approved
changes noted.
III. Updates:
A. MSU Retiree Association
Professor Wickert updated the Committee on The Retiree Association meeting. He indicated that an article about the Pam Beemer talk was included in the “Spartan Senior Citizen” and pointed out that everyone was welcome to attend. He said that if we provide the bios of upcoming seminar speakers that they would try to put it in their newsletters to members. Professor said that their group attended the Big 10 retiree group meeting at Purdue University.
B. Representation on University Committees
A meeting has been set up with Dr. Potchen, Chair of ECAC to discuss our representation on University Committees. Hopefully, we can get Jon Sticklen, the former Chair, to attend to give his views on representation. Stone and Rovner will represent the FEA. Tentatively, October 5 is the date of the meeting but it may change due to schedule conflicts.
C. Awards Committee
Professor Gliozzo asked for additional representation on the Committee for this
years awards. Professor Vanosdall agreed to serve on the Committee. The group
will be chaired by Professor Gliozzo and the other members are Professors Deal,
Stone, Greenbaum, Ishino and Vanosdall. Professor Gliozzo will have a meeting
of the group shortly and it is expected that a letter to Deans, Department Chairs
asking for nominations will go out in early January of 2007.
D. Lecture/Seminar Committee
Professor Gliozzo provided information on the Pam Beemer presentation on October
16. It was noted that the MSU Retirees Association has an article about the
talk and that a notice has been put in the MSU News noting the event. Professor
Reid will send out his email notice to all faculty retirees the week prior to
the talk.
The Steering Committee recommended two additional speakers for January and March of 2007. They will be contacted for availability. An update will be provided at our next meeting about the availability and the topics of the speakers.
.
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned a 3:40 p.m.
