MSU  Faculty Emeriti Association

Steering Committee Meeting Minutes

443 B Administration Building

March 20, 2007,  1:30-3:30 p.m.

Attendees:  Stone, Reid, Gliozzo, and Greenbaum

    I.  Welcome

Chair Stone welcomed the group and noted that the next meeting of the Steering Committee will be on April 25. He noted that the next Seminar by Dr. Rose Zacks would on March 21, 2007

Stone said that a revision of the FEA brochure was complete and that Professor Funk was in the process of formatting the material so that it could be printed.  Stone also mentioned that he would be leaving early to attend a Faculty Council meeting and he asked Professor Gliozzo to take over when he left.  Finally, it was noted that the Retiree lunch was scheduled for April 10 and that the Provost would present the awards for the MSU Faculty Emeriti Association

II.               The minutes of the February 21, 2007 meeting were approved.

III.             Report on the March 13 Faculty Council Meeting

Stone indicated that the FEA was now recognized at the Faculty Council and Academic Council with voice but without vote.  He summarized the meeting which included a new policy on deferred grades, allowing the admission of high school students with high achievement to take college level courses, a gender identity report and the introduction of a new structure for Academic Governance (Task Force 1 Report).

He emphasized that in the long-run, the FEA needed to appoint two regular members for these committees.  They meet once or twice each month and it is important that we have representation at them.  The process of elections should be discussed at our next meeting.

IV.            FEA Bylaws

The FEA Bylaws passed with a unanimous vote.  The Bylaws had been distributed by email and a vote was taken of the Steering Committee.

Professor Wickert called Professor Stone with a request for a future change in the Bylaws.  He requested an amendment be put in the Bylaws that the said that the FEA would not intentionally engage in any activity that would be in conflict with the MSU Retirees Association.  No action was taken on this request at this time.

V.              Updates:

A.    Lecture/Seminar Series

Professor Gliozzo noted the Professor Greenbaum would introduce Dr. Rose Zacks at the April 21 seminar.  It appears that her topic is one of great interest to the public.

He said that Dr. Robert Banks had agreed to give the April 26 seminar.  His topic will be:  Changing Life and Times of MSU Faculty:  A 40 Year Perspective.

B.     Awards Committee:

Stone excused himself from the meeting because he had to attend the Faculty Council (2:45 p.m.).  Professor Gliozzo then took over the meeting.

The Awards Committee presented its recommendations for the 2007 awards.  The individual award will be presented to Dr. David Greenbaum and the unit award will go the MSU Museum.  The Committee had, in addition, suggested that special recognition be given to several of the other nominees.

The steering committee decided that the awards should focus only on the unit and individual. Moreover, they accept the report of the Awards Committee on these awards.

As far as special recognition awards, this category should be discussed at the next steering committee meeting on April 25. The main issue will be whether the Awards committee in evaluating the applications in the future should consider special recognition awards.

If the decision of steering committee is favorable then there should be additions to the by-laws recognizing these special recognition awards.

No special recognition awards will be recognized at the April 10 retirees' luncheon except the FEA “unit and individual award” and the leadership award to Dr. Larry Sommers.

The Steering Committee recommended that in the “individual criteria award” the phrase “faculty emeriti” should be added.
