Attendees:  Stone, Gliozzo, Sommers, Reid, Medick, Wickert, Greenbaum,  Forsyth, Kimball and Ishino

Staff:  Shaw

I.  Chair Stone welcomed the group and Don Jost the President of the MSU Retirees Association.   The next meeting of the Steering Committee will be on March 29, 2006.

Stone noted that he had an email from a professor at the University of Wisconsin inquiring about the MSU Faculty Emeriti Association.  Information about our Association was forwarded to him.

Don Jost spoke about the MSU Retirees Association.  He talks about discussions of his executive committee at a recent meeting.  His group asked him as to why it was needed for a new group (MSU Faculty Emeriti Association) when a retiree group already existed.  A discussion followed about the need for two organizations.  Stone indicated that the MSU Emeriti Faculty Association had a primary goal of having retired “faculty” to continue their active engagement with the University and to share their lifetime of experience and expertise in an ongoing collaboration that is mutually valued and enriching.  Don Jost was aware of this goal.  Both organizations have important roles to play and it was agreed it was important to continually communicate so that we eliminate any possible conflicts.  Don Jost talked about the potential for exploring joint or contiguous offices for better uses of resources.  We agreed to explore with them potential areas for cooperation.

II.  The minutes of the February 4, 2006 meeting were approved.

III.  Updates:

A.  Lecture/Seminar Series:

Dr. Gordon Rohman, Professor Emeritus of English, will present the next lecture in the series.  His topic is “Reading for Your Life.  The lecture will be held on March 30 from 2:00-3:30 p.m.  Stone said that he would put a notice in the MSU News and Professor Reid indicated that he would send out an email and invite retirees to the lecture.  Professor Kimball will introduce Dr. Rohman at the lecture.

Two potential speakers were approached about the June lecture.  Both will be out of the country and not be available.  Fortunately, both indicated an interest for a future date.  The Steering Committee discussed other potential speakers and will approach one of them for the June lecturer.

B.  Awards Committee:

The MSU Retirees lunch will be held on April 11, 2006.  At that time, the MSU Faculty Emeriti Association will present an award for the unit and the individual that have done exceptional work for faculty retirees.  Stone said that we need to staff a table before and after the lunch were interested faculty retirees can get information and becoming active with our group.

Professor Gliozzo said that we have received a number of nominations for the award.  He is the chair of the selection committee and they will be getting together shortly for selection of the winners.

C.  209 Olds Hall:

Keys for the door have been ordered so that members of the Faculty Retiree Association will have access to the room and be able to use it for Association activities.  In addition, it was noted that a telephone has been ordered for the room.  This will provide an answering machine and will make the office more useful.  We are still in the process of acquiring computers, a water dispenser and reading material for the room.

D.  Representation on University Academic Committees:

An email has been sent to Ms. Jacqueline Wright, the Secretary of Academic Governance to initiate the process of getting representation on certain committees.  The request was for voice but not for a vote on the committees.  Ms. Wright agreed to send our request forward.  We should have information on our request by the next meeting.

E.  Faculty Survey Results:

Numerous faculty responded to the survey that was sent out in February.  There appears to be an active interest in forming groups for further study in specific areas.  Some of the suggested topics involve Classics and Modern Literature, Clinical Medical Issues, International Issues, Science and Math, Environmental Issues and others.  The Steering Committee will decide at the next meeting on how to move the suggestions forward.

F.  Chair Stone said that a large part of our next meeting would be devoted to

Organizing the Steering Committee to better plan for the future.  This would include developing committees that would be in charge of specific projects and developing short and long-range goals for the Association.  The Association has reached the stage that planning for the future is important and a permanent structure is developed.
