Steering Committee Meeting Minutes

209 Olds Hall

June 21, 2006 1:30-3:30 p.m.

Attendees: Stone, Sommers, Reid, Wickert, Greenbaum, Forsyth, Kimball Ishino, Funk, Gliozzo, McCartney, Medick and Shaw

I. Chair Stone welcomed the group and noted that the next meetings of the Steering Committee will be on July 26, 2006. He welcomed Mary MCartney to our meeting.

He also announced that an anonymous contribution to the FEA was given to continue to support our annual awards

II. The minutes of the May 24, 2006 meeting were approved.

III. Professors Stone and Gliozzo met with Deborah Dezure and Allyn Shaw on June 14. Two topics were discussed. One being the autonomy of FEA from her office and the other was on her opinion of the FEA seeking representation on the University Faculty Committees.

Dr. Dezure indicated that the FEA had matured as an organization and had reached the point that she considers the group as being able to function without extensive help from her office. Her office will continue to financially support the FEA but that Dr. Shaw would be decreasing his role with the FEA. She feels that the FEA has made great strides in program development over the past year.

Dr. Dezure has no problem with the FEA seeking representation on University Committees. She reviewed the letter from Don Jost, the President of the MSU Retirees Association. His letter said they support the goals of our organization in seeking representation. The FEA will compose a letter to the Academic Council stating that the MSU Retiree Association supports our intent.

II. Updates:

A.. MSU Retiree Association

Professor Wickert updated the Committee on The Retiree Association meeting. He noted that the group was not meeting during the summer but would be holding a meeting on July 26. He will keep them informed as to our progress on gaining representation on University Committees.

B. Lecture/Seminar Series

Professor Kimball reported that a speaker had agreed to be the lecture in September. The speaker would be Dr. Howard Tanner and the lecture would be presented on Wednesday, September 13, 2006. Dr. Kimball will try to get the exact title of the talk by our next meeting.

It was decided that the Recognition Committee needed addition members because of its extensive work. Professors Greenbaum and Sommers agreed to serve.

Professor Gliozzo suggested that we might want different formats for the lecture series such as panel discussions etc. The Steering Committee seemed to be in agreement. Gliozzo wanted the group to approve a speaker after the Dr. Tanner lecture. After much discussion, it was decided to ask Pam Beemer from Human Resources to be our speaker for later in the fall.

C. Representation on University Committees

It was decide that Stone would develop a letter that could be sent to the Academic Council that again requests representation by our group. He will put in the letter that we have the support of the MSU Retiree Association. Hopefully, this letter can be available for discussion at our next meeting.

III. MSU FEA Organization Structure

A very active discussion took place on the FEA Guidelines. After a couple of motions and counter motions Stone stopped the discussion and decided another approach was needed to the discussions. He will meet with a committee and have them suggest changes in the Guidelines. These would then come back to the next meeting for approval. The Committee will be made up of Professors Stone, Kimball, Funk, Sommers and Wickert.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 3:40 p.m.
