MSU Emeriti Faculty Association

Steering Committee Meeting Minutes

Room 209 Olds Hall

January 05, 2006, 1:30-3:30 p.m.

Attendees:  Stone, Gliozzo, Sommers, Reid, Medick, and Greenbaum

Staff:  Shaw

I.                 Chair Stone welcomed the group.  It was noted that the next two meetings would be held on February 1 and March 1, 2006 from 1:30-3:30 p.m.  The February and March meetings will be in the Board Room of the Administration Building.  Future meeting of the group will be scheduled for 209 Hall, the renovated room designed for use by the faculty emeriti.   The new furniture has been installed in the meeting room.  Professor Funk was thanked for his extensive work in selecting and setting up the new furniture for the room.  The next steps for  improving the room is to find computers, a telephone, and a hot/cold water source to provide coffee for visiting faculty emeriti.  It is hoped that the room can be opened up for use of all faculty emeriti while visiting the campus.  Also, it is expected that the Faculty Emeriti Association will use this room for future meetings.

II.               The minutes of the December 7, 2005 meeting were approved.

III.             Professor Reid brought the group up to date on the activities of the MSU Retiree Association.

IV.            The next lecture of the MSU Faculty Emeriti Association is scheduled for January 12, 2006.  Dr. H. J. deBlij is the speaker and his topic will be “Reflections on Environmental Geography Behind Human History”.  The time for the lecture is 3:00-5:00 p.m.  Professor Stone thanked Professor Reid for his work in sending out the email to retirees about the lecture.  It turns out that the requests to the “Senior Citizen” and the MSU News Bulletin were too late to make the December issues and they would not be published again until after the lecture.

The group discussed potential speakers for the next couple of lectures.  It was decided that we should have as a goal four lectures per year.  This, of course, can be adjusted depending upon available speakers and current topics.  After discussing a number of excellent candidates, it was determined to approach Dr. Gordon D. Rohman, Professor Emeritus, English.  Dr. Gliozzo will ask him if he will consider presenting our next lecture.

V.              Updates:

A. Stone and Funk met earlier to develop a letter to go to those that responded to the initial faculty emeriti survey.  The letter is in its final stages and it is expected that it will go to the faculty emeriti in January.  Further information is being requested in the letter that we will send to those that answered our survey.  Professor Funk designed the letter and the response card for sending to the faculty emeriti.

                              B.  Professor Gliozzo reported that the letter announcing the annual award to units

and to individuals has been completed.  The announcement of the awards will be sent out in January.  Copies of the letter and nomination form will be distributed at our next meeting.

C.  Stone reported that the Red Cedar Log was still interested in getting help from the

Association.  He indicated that he had not written to the Deans as he indicated at the last meeting.  He indicated that this needed to be done.

VI.             Other Issues:  Dr. Allyn Shaw indicated that the Senior Class Council has asked our group if we wanted to participate in selecting the outstanding seniors and faculty for the academic year.  The faculty emeriti expressed interest in participating.
