The meeting of the Steering Committee of the MSU Faculty Emeriti Association was called to order by the Chairman with the following members present: Forsyth, Rivera, Stone, Gliozzo, Harper-Jones, Adams, Sparrow, Rovner, Ishino, Wickert, Greenbaum, Medic, Ferris and Fischer.  The minutes were approved as corrected.

The Chair reported that future meeting dates had been tentatively set and Room 209 Olds Hall reserved.  The meeting dates are:  June 25, July 23, August 20, September 24, October 22, November 19 and December 17.

1. NOMINATIONS  COMMITTEE

• (Forsyth, Rivera, Stone, Greenbaum and Harper-Jones) The Committee met and reported that six persons have been suggested for membership on the Steering Committee.  The current By-laws indicate that there will be 12 members on the Steering Committee with four being elected annually for three year terms.  Having ethnic diversity is viewed as a value worthy of consideration.  Biographical information on the six “candidates” was shared; not all have been approached about running for the Steering Committee or agreed to serve.  There was no action motion offered regarding the number of prospective members to be presented at the annual meeting. 
  

2. SPRING MEETING
• The Spring Meeting format, date and location were discussed.  A 2-4 p.m. gathering at Kellogg Center on June 19 is one option.  After discussion, a motion by Medic, seconded by Greenbaum, proposed that the Spring Meeting replace the regular meeting of the Steering Committee and be held either at Kellogg Center or in the Radiology Building on June 25.  The motion was approved. 

• Presenting “tokens” of appreciation to two persons who have assisted the Steering Committee was discussed.  A motion by Greenbaum, seconded by Medic, was approved authorizing Harper-Jones and Gliosso to purchase suitable appreciation mementoes, to be presented at the Spring Meeting or a subsequent committee meeting.   
  

3. LECTURE/SEMINAR SERIES
• Fischer reported that Professors Walter and Elsa Verdehr will present a look into “The Verdehr Trio: Making Music around the World” on Friday, May 30th in the Radiology Auditorium.  The next lecture will be scheduled for early fall.
  
4. ON-LINE JOURNAL
• Gliozzo reported that additional responses to the survey about the journal have been received.  An early June work-session is being planned.  
  
5. ORAL HISTORY PROJECT
• Ferris indicted that the committee will be meeting with John Revitte to discuss his involvement in the project the first week of June and plan next steps for the project.
  
6. UPDATES

1. MSU Retiree Association:  Wickert reported that the spring luncheon was very successful.  The dead-line to submit copy for the Association’s next newsletter is June 1st. 

2. Faculty Council:  Stone stated that the Task Force Report passed and is being readied for distribution.  The University By-laws are being up-dated.
   
3. Other Issues 
   1. Stone requested that suggested changes to the MSU Faculty Emeriti Association By-laws be sent to him and Forsyth as soon as possible.
   2. Gliozzo reminded members that there will be a fall magazine collection for distribution by Service Learning students. He also passed along an invitation to tour the Library’s special collections and have lunch as guests of the Library. (It was suggested that perhaps a seminar presentation in the fall might focus on these collections.)

   3. Ishino shared information concerning the availability of quality free courses being offered on line by various institutions.  He also recommended that Prof. John Miller be considered as a fall seminar speaker; his topic might be “Science and Democracy.” Ishino also raised the provocative question, “What does n educated person know?”
