MSU Faculty Emeriti Association
Steering Committee Meeting Minutes
Wednesday, April 23, 2008
1:30–3:10 p.m.
209 Olds Hall
The meeting of the Steering Committee of the MSU Faculty Emeriti Faculty Association was called to order by the Chairman with the following members present: Forsyth, Fischer, Adams, Stone, Gliozzo, Nelson, Ferris, Harper-Jones, Ishino, Wickert and Rivera. Lois Bader was a guest.
- OPENING COMMENTS
-
The next meeting will be held on May 21. Stone received a follow - up response from John Powell, Chair of the University Committee on Faculty Affairs, requesting representation on the MSU Heath Task Force.
-
The minutes of the previous meeting were approved as corrected.
- NOMINATIONS COMMITTEE REPORT
- A slate of nominations for membership on the Steering Committee will be presented at the May meeting, and officers for the next year will be identified. By-law changes will be made at the spring meeting. Plans for the spring meeting will be reported at the next meeting.
- LECTURE/SEMINAR SERIES
-
Mohammed Ayoob, University Distinguished Professor of International Relations, James Madison and Department of Political Science will present a lecture/seminar on April 24 in the Radiology Building. His topic will be “The Many Faces of Islam.” The May lecture will be held the latter part of the month and will feature Elsa and Walter Verdehr. Fischer would appreciate receiving suggestions for fall seminar speakers. Shaw will purchase gift certificates for $50 to be presented to seminar speakers, including those who spoke earlier this year.
- ON LINE JOURNAL
- Gliozzo reported that the committee met with Lois Bader and Marilyn Rothert recently to discuss the Journal. He also reported on the responses received from the survey sent out by Funk; 169 people responded; 117 indicated an interest in receiving an on line journal; 52 have worked on a journal or newsletter; and 9 wish to submit material. An extended meeting or several half day meetings should be scheduled in the next few weeks to develop an appropriate process to move this project, which has a lot of support, forward. (Perhaps lecture/seminar speakers would be willing to submit material for the journal.)
- UPDATES
- Steering Committee Representatives are continuing to attend the Faculty and Academic Councils and the Trustee Meeting. The Faculty Council Task Force I is in its final stage of approval.
- Wickert reminded members that the Retiree Association Luncheon will be held on May 12.
- Ferris reported that the Museum continues to be interested in assisting with the Oral History Project but due to budget cuts, can not participate without reimbursement for the services provided. Shaw has had contact with John Revitte, who has expertise in this area, and may be willing to provide assistance. Ferris will contact Revitte to explore his interest and availability and schedule a meeting if one is appropriate.
The meeting was adjourned at 3:00 p.m.
Maxine Ferris, Secretary.
