The meeting of the Steering Committee of the MSU Faculty Emeriti Association was called to order by the Chairman with the following members present: Gliozzo, Adams, Nelson, Ferris, Harper-Jones, Ishino, Wickert, Forsythe, Sparrow and Stone.
Stone reported that a letter of resignation had been received from Bill Simpson, who was elected to the Steering Committee last year. He also indicated that letters had been sent to members of the Association requesting nominations to the Steering Committee and to John Powell, Chair of the University Committee on Faculty Affairs, requesting representation on the MSU Health Task Force.
The minutes of the previous meeting on February 20, 2008 were approved as corrected.
(Gliozzo, Stone, Rivera, Forsythe and Harper-Jones) met to discuss possible nominees for the Steering Committee and the upcoming spring meeting. A future meeting will determine the time and place for the business meeting, election of Steering Committee members and possible by-law changes. There is interest in having a luncheon meeting and perhaps a speaker.
The Awards Committee (Gliozzo, Stone, Ishino, Greenbaum and Leo Deal) met to consider the 11 individual nominees and four unit award nominations. Two awards in each category will be presented at the Retiree Luncheon in April. Receiving awards will be Les Manderscheid and Russ Erickson and the Departments of Horticulture and Radiology. There was considerable discussion concerning the appropriate criteria for these awards. Some suggestions were: retiree’s contribution since retiring, extent to which retiree is a role model for those looking toward retirement, breadth of retiree’s contributions since retiring ala the University’s land grant mission.
There will be a presentation by Dennis Fijalkowski on “Michigan is Cougar Country” on Thursday, March 27 in the Radiology Building. It was suggested that a fall speaker might be a person able to discuss the “Lost Boys,” which will be the topic of the book selected for the next campus-community read.
The meeting was adjourned at 3:00 p.m. (The next meeting will be held on April 23, 2008.)
