Steering Committee Meeting Minutes

December 19, 2007, 1:30–3:30 p.m.

The December 19, 2007 meeting of the Steering Committee of the MSU of the MSU Emeriti Faculty Association was called to order by the Chairman with the following members attending: Stone, Forsyth, Nelson, Ishino, Rivera, Wickert, Adams, Medic, Gliozzo, Shaw and Ferris. Minutes of the previous meeting were approved as distributed.

    1. Wickert reported that the dead-line for the Retiree Association newsletter is January 14; Roger Funk is assisting this group with the installation/use of their new computer.
    2. Gliozzo reported that the lecture by Dr. .Harsh was well attended. The next lecture will be on Wednesday, January 23, 2 0 0 8 . Dr. James Trosko will speak on “Stem Cells: their Potential Roll in the Cause, Prevention and Treatment of Human Diseases.” Rivera will introduce the speaker.

      A motion by Adams, seconded by Rivera passed that a $50 gift certificate from Schuler’s Book Store, along with a suitable certificate of appreciation, be presented to seminar speaker’s following their presentations. There was discussion about making this practice reto-active, but no decision was reached concerning this matter. Medic recommended that response cards to prepared and distributed at seminars to determine who is attending and whether the goals for these lectures are being achieved. No action was taken.

    3. Letters soliciting nominations for the individual and unit awards will be sent out by the Provost’s office. Committee members are needed. Suggested for this committee were: Leo Deal and Dr. Ishino. The awards will be presented by the provost at the Retirees’ Luncheon in the spring.
    4. Adams attended the last meeting of the Board of Trustees. A highlight was the introduction of top academic students and the Marshall Scholarship winner. Alison Barber will be returning to her position as Associate Professor of Management, following her service as Secretary of the Board of Trustees.

    5. According to Gliozzo, the fall magazine collection went very well and was much appreciated. Magazines were distributed to The Pines, East Lansing Health Center and White Hills Nursing Home. A spring gathering of magazines may be scheduled, according to Karen Casey, Service Learning Coordinator. Ishino shared the essence of a WALL STREET JOURNAL article, “Ethics 1 0 1.” A follow-up suggestion was that Dr. Ian Gray, Vice President for Research, be invited to present a lecture as part of the seminar series on “Ethical Issue in Research.”

    The next meeting will be held on January 22, 2008. The meeting was adjourned at 3:3 0.
