I. Chair Stone welcomed the group. A discussion followed about the outstanding lecture provided by Dr. H. J. de Blij. It was a very successful lecture and well attended.
The following dates have been set as meeting dates of the Steering Committee:
March 1, 2006
March 29, 2006
April 26, 2006
May 24, 2006
June 21, 2006
All of the scheduled meetings will be held in 209 Olds Hall.
It was noted that Chair Stone had been in contact with Don Jost, Chair of the MSU Retirees Association. Don Jost has been invited to address the Steering Committee at the next meeting to discuss potential areas of cooperation between the two organizations.
An email to the Steering Committee suggested that the Committee take steps to request that the Faculty Emeriti Association takes steps to request representation on the Academic Council, Faculty Affairs and other relevant Committees that are involved in issues important to faculty retirees. It was suggested that the membership might be formalized and that the representation would be with voice but nonvoting member of the committees. The Steering Committee thought that this was a good idea and directed Professor Stone to determine what steps would be needed to determine if this might be feasible.
II. The minutes of the January 5, 2006 meeting were approved.
III. Professor Wickert brought the group up to date on the activities of the MSU Retiree Association. It was noted that the annual meeting of the Retiree Association would be held on May 8, 2006 in the Kellogg Center. It is at this meeting that the officers for the next year are selected.
IV. The next lecture of the MSU Faculty Emeriti Association is scheduled for March 30, 2006. Dr. Gordan Rohman is the speaker and his topic will be “Reading for Your Life”. The time for the lecture is 2:00-3:30 p.m. Professor Stone thanked Professor Reid for his work in sending out the email to retirees about previous lectures and requested that he continue with his fine work. Stone will contact the “Senior Citizen” and the MSU News Bulletin about the upcoming lecture.
The Committee selected two potential speakers for the June lecture. These individuals will be contacted to see if they are available for that date.
V. Updates:
A Faculty Survey:
The survey to faculty emeriti that responded to the earlier survey is scheduled to go out next week. Dr. Dezure is looking the material over and will be sent out by her office. The Committee thanked Dr. Funk for his extensive work on the material to be sent. All members of the Steering Committee have been listed in the document so that respondents might contact you directly with any questions.
B. Professor Gliozzo reported that the letter announcing the annual award to units
and to individuals has been sent out to units and to individuals. The announcement of the awards was sent out in January 16. The deadline for nominations is February 22, 2006. The Awards Committee has received one nomination as of this date.
C. 209 Olds Hall
All future meeting of the Steering Committee will probably be held in 209 Olds Hall. The room has new furniture and is well suited for our meetings. Stone will work with Dr. Shaw in getting quotes and suggestions for a telephone system, computers, newspapers and a cold/hot water dispenser. Hopefully, by our next meeting they will have updated information on the completion of the room for our use.
